Conor was having trouble with a laptop drive that didn’t seem to want to burn direct to cdr discs using the native windows xp drag and drop technique.
Heres a few things to try if you have this problem on either a laptop or desktop pc:
- Try a different blank cd, some are dodgy and if possible try a different make unless the ones you have are the ones you’ve been using all along.
- Make sure the drive can do other things like playing and reading cd’s and dvd’s.
- Have a look in your Device Manager to see if it reports any problems for your drive. ‘Right-click My Computer- Properties – Hardware – Device Manager – DVD/CDrom drives’. Also, while in the device manager, right-click the ‘IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers’ and make sure they are all ‘DMA if available’ under ‘Advanced settings’.
- Lenses sometimes get dirty so try using a cotton bud and some alcohol to clean the lens. This will be easier with a laptop! If you have a desktop, try one a cd lens cleaner product.
- Rather than use the xp drag and drop burning method try using dedicated cd/dvd burning software such as Nero (commercial) or CD Burner XP (Free).
- You could also try downloading the latest drivers from the manufacturers website.
- If all else fails, you may need a new drive but the good news is they are fairly cheap these days.
