Artur asked a question about his windows xp pc not recognising usb devices when plugged in and returning the error “device malfunctioned”. Here are some possible solutions:
If restarting your pc and/or unplugging and replugging the USB device doesn’t work then right-click ‘My Computer – Properties – Hardware – Device Manager’ and see are there any exclamation marks beside any USB related entries.
While in the device manager, highlight ‘Computer’ and click the ‘scan for hardware changes’ button, close the device manager and see if the problem still persists.
You can also try to update your USB drivers/firmware. The latest drivers will always be available from your motherboard manufacturers website so google your pc maker and have a look in the ‘support’ section of their website.
You might also try getting some hotfix updates from the Microsoft update website.
