Power Button Fault – Orange Light

Author: | Posted in the "PC Hardware" Category

Rick asks why the light on the power button stays orange and fails to power up the PC. Theres several possible reasons for this:

  1. Dodgy Power Button.
  2. Failed or Failing Power Supply.
  3. Hard Drive Fault.

Heres what to try:

First of all, open the PC and check all internal cables to make sure none are loose. While you’re there, clean out any dust thats there for the heck of it! With the cover still off, turn the pc back on and look & listen for hard drive and power supply noises.

If the power supply fan isn’t working or if theres a burning smell off it that wouldn’t be good. * Don’t open the power supply casing to investigate further as you’ll get a nasty shock whether the pc is powered up or not!

The hard drive can be taken out and tested in another pc if you have one, otherwise theres not much you can do with it.

The good news is that Power buttons, Hard Drives and Power Supplies are all fairly cheap and can be self installed.
