CD Drive not reading Discs

Author: | Posted in the "PC Hardware" Category

Donald was having a problem with his CD/DVD drive not recognising discs, heres some possible causes and solutions:

  1. An old drive, incompatible with modern discs.
  2. A faulty laser or drive.
  3. Drive Firmware/Drivers outdated.
  4. Incompatible Writing software.

Try the obvious and cheap solutions first as always! Make sure the drive has power at least by trying to open the tray. Open the pc and make sure all connections to the drive are secure. Try to get a decent commercial lens cleaner specifically for computer drives and see if that makes some kind of difference.

Using a dedicated burning software such as the free CD Burner XP is always better than using the native write function in windows so try that next.

Heres a more complicated solution. Right-click My Computer – Properties – Hardware – Device Manager and on the entry for DVD/CD ROM drives, right-click your drive and choose Uninstall. The reboot the pc and let it find the drive and install it again.
