Unmountable Boot Volume

Author: | Posted in the "PC Software" Category

Kieran manually (via the power button) powered off a frozen laptop with Windows XP on it and when trying to restart, it kept going to a blue screen of death with the error message “unmountable_boot_volume”.  In this instance it seems the file system got corrupted on power off. Fixing the issue involved booting the laptop with the XP recovery/OS disk in and pressing ‘R’ to go into repair mode when the windows install screen loaded. At the command prompt type “chkdsk /r” and press return then let the system basically fix itself. It took about 2 hours for this scan so be patient but when it was done the laptop booted back into windows normally as before.
