Mike has the unusual problem of having everything on the display of his old XP based PC show upside down! Rotating the monitor sorts it out temporarily but a longer term fix is needed.

While it’s possible that some kind of virus could have caused this it’s more likely that at some stage display software settings were changed. Try pressing CTRL + ALT + (Down/Up Arrow keys) at the same time. If that doesn’t work try adjusting your computers graphic card settings as below:

Right click on the Desktop – Properties – Settings – Advanced. Open the “Rotation Tab” and adjust accordingly.

Abhay’s PC with Windows 7 keeps shutting down when watching a movie or playing “Need for Speed: Most Wanted”.

This is a classic sign that your computer can’t handle the resources necessary to run games and movies but since your computer specifications aren’t too bad I’m gonna guess it’s an issue with your Graphics/Video Card or your CPU is overheating. I’d try another video card if possible and if it’s still happening maybe the CPU fan or other internal fan is gone. The CPU might need some more thermal compound on it too.

There’s is also a chance that the power supply could be faulty.

Bob’s CPU and Computer shuts itself down while watching Blu Ray DVD’s.

The first thing that springs to my mind is that your computer might not be able to handle the data transfer required to watch Blu Rays so it overheats and shuts down. Is it an old, low spec pc that you recently added a Blu Ray player to?

Another thing could be that your graphics card or monitor can’t handle Blu Ray resolution. Can you try increase the resolution or try another graphics card?

The first thing I would do is upgrade the drivers for the Blu Ray player, Graphics card and Blu Ray player software and see how you go.

Mike’s computer went through the mail from a former house and now isn’t powering up.

I’d open her up first and have a quick look to see if any cables have been dislodged in transit. Touch the metal case of the pc first to release any static electricity and avoid frying sensitive components. If ti still doesn’t work and there’s no sound coming from the pc at all when switched on (hard drive or fans) I’d look first at the power supply unit PSU. These are cheap enough to replace. If it’s still not working with a new PSU, you may be looking at serious damage to the motherboard or hard drive. Possibly temperature or water damage depending on conditions during transport.

Rifatul has been getting the above error followed by PC shutdown and failure to restart.

It’s fairly obviously an issue with the graphics card or card drivers so you should start by uninstalling and re-installing the drivers then maybe searching for updated drivers on the card manufacturers website. If that doesn’t work then maybe it’s the card itself overheating or something. Try switching to the onboard/default graphics card if your pc has one. There’s a small chance your CPU might be overheating or your PSU could be faulty.

Frederick has lost WiFi on his laptop for no particular reason, all other devices in the house work fine.

Let’s start with the obvious. It’s easy enough to disable wifi on a laptop by hitting key combinations accidentally. A combination of “Fn” and one of the function keys at the top of the keyboard turns wifi on and off so check that it’s enabled.

Your wifi might still be enabled but the connection dropped and was forgotten for some reason so click on the Network symbol on the taskbar bottom right (looks like a mobile signal) and see if any networks are picked up or can be connected to.

Did you install an additional wifi receiver/adapter or software or maybe update wifi software on the laptop? If so, your normal wifi software might have been disabled and need to be re-connected manually. Changing settings on the router can also affect things.

Check the Device Manager to see if the wifi card is listed without errors.

Finally, do a virus scan to make sure viruses havn’t hijacked your network.

If the obvious fixes fail then you may have a hardware issue with your laptop’s wifi card. You can get a new USB adapter for very little these days.

Joe’s monitor is not coming on and he’s tried switching out monitors, RAM, graphics card etc. Joe, the one constant in all your testing is the motherboard so that might be faulty in some way and that would necessitate a trip to the local pc repair shop and a biggish job to fix/replace. The power supply could be on but still be faulty or maybe it’s the leads/connections but I presume you checked these first? Have a close look at connections to make sure they’re not bent or dirty or something.

Also, check the BIOS to make sure the system is not set to use a defunct onboard graphics adapter instead of your card.

Declan can’t logon to his network because of the following error:

“Realtek RTL8139(a/b/c/8130) PCI fast ethernet NIC.

This device is disabled because the BIOS for the device did not give it a IRQ (interrupt request) code 29. You must enable the device in the BIOS”

Pretty much as the error message says, you need to boot up into the BIOS/Setup screen (usually by pressing F2 repeatedly on startup) and find the ‘Network’ entry and see if you can enable it there. If not, you could try downloading the latest drivers for your network card.

Worst case scenario, your card might be faulty but new ones are cheap.

PS – Windows 98 is now 14 years old!

Kieran manually (via the power button) powered off a frozen laptop with Windows XP on it and when trying to restart, it kept going to a blue screen of death with the error message “unmountable_boot_volume”. In this instance it seems the file system got corrupted on power off. Fixing the issue involved booting the laptop with the XP recovery/OS disk in and pressing ‘R’ to go into repair mode when the windows install screen loaded. At the command prompt type “chkdsk /r” and press return then let the system basically fix itself. It took about 2 hours for this scan so be patient but when it was done the laptop booted back into windows normally as before.

Christine’s pc turns off during Windows XP installation.

There are many possible reasons for this so not sure where to start. Computers turning off automatically regardless of what you’re doing is normally a sign of an overheating CPU. The CPU turns itself off to avoid damage. It may have started to overheat due to a fan failure, dust build up in the vents or heat sink failure.

Also try resetting settings in your BIOS to default and take out the CMOS batter for a few seconds first. Check your windows install DVD/CD is not scratched or corrupt.

Subash’s PC is running slow all of a sudden having been fine before.

There are so many possible causes for slowing computers. Here’s a few:

Lack of space on hard drive,

CPU overheating,

Viruses,

Corrupt registry,

Hardware ageing.

Try some of these fixes:

Clear unused files and programs,

Run Disc Cleanup,

Delete Restore Points,

Run a virus scan,

Run a system maintenance utility.

You could probably do with a better CPU and more RAM too at this stage. And maybe an operating system upgrade from XP.

A good virus scanner and registry cleaner is Bullguard Internet Security.

Jimon has an overclocked PC and was in the middle of gaming when the computer turned itself off. Now it turns on but goes off again automatically after a few mins.

It kinda sounds obvious to me that your overclocked CPU is struggling to cope and is overheating and turning off the computer to protect itself. It could have been damaged during an overheat too. Other possible issues are the graphics card and power supply so try swapping these out if possible.

To deal with an overheating CPU, you might need to go into the BIOS/Setup screen on boot and revert to default values.

Conor has installed a new power supply unit but there are issues with power buttons, fans and led’s flashing.

Presuming you’ve connected everything right and leads aren’t loose or faulty, I would say the initial problem may have been the motherboard and not the previous PSU? Or the new PSU may be faulty and may have damaged the motherboard. Sometimes the blinking LED’s can give you a clue as to the issue. If you google blinking codes for your particular computer you may get a clue.

I’d try another PSU first before doing anything with the motherboard.

Obvious things first. Make sure the microphone is in the right socket and the system sound settings are correct in the control panel. For programs like Audacity and Skype, etc, you need to go into the settings and tell the program which port the microphone is connected to.

Failing that, it is of course possible your microphone or card is faulty.

I’m not sure if it’s the dreaded Blue Screen of Death in which you’ll see a load of funny looking text/code followed by an automatic restart or whether it’s a continuous blank blue screen?

However, it may indicate either a faulty piece of hardware in your pc or faulty drivers. The fact your pc works in safe mode might indicate a driver/software issue so try going on to windows update or manufacturers websites and getting updated drivers for all your plugin cards like graphics cards, sound cards etc..

You could also try removing things like graphics cards, RAM sticks etc and see if the problem persists.

This is an easy one. Every computer has a small CMOS battery on board that powers the storage of information like date and time, bootup and BIOS settings. Yours is obviously in need of replacement. They only last a few years. It’s not a difficult thing to replace. You’ll find easy step by step instructions in Google.

First of all I’d check that your graphics card supports audio through the HDMI socket. Have a look at the makers website. If you’re sure it does then check your sound settings and maybe set “digital” to be the default sound output. See here:

Every time Andrea plugs in her USB Flash drive to do a backup, it shuts down the computer with the message – “Your computer has just recovered from a critical error”. Removing the drive solves the issue. I’d say the drive is faulty in some way or may even contain a virus. Anti-virus software is capable of scanning these drives and fixing them so try that. Also try getting the latest drivers for the USB stick. Try using it in another pc too to see if it has the same effect. Worst case, the stick may be damaged in some way so try to get data onto a new one.
